Roadway Reconstruction and Streetscaping

DiDonato Associates was selected by USA Niagara Development Corporation and the City of Niagara Falls to provide design services for the roadway improvements, streetscaping, and wayfinding system for Old Falls Street between Third Street and Rainbow Boulevard North.  The primary objective of the Project is to maximize the potential for private business investment by improving access and the overall setting for economic development activities in downtown Niagara Falls and connecting the Casino to the State Park.

Work in the 1st phase (East Mall) included new sidewalk paving, full-depth roadway reconstruction, drainage systems, new granite curbing and accessible curb-cuts.  The City wanted to restore vehicular lanes on the street, which was pedestrian only, on a seasonal basis.  Streetscaping involved hardscape and gateway elements; street furniture (benches, trash receptacles, bicycle racks, bollards, etc.); sidewalk/walkway features using new pavers and conventional/ exposed aggregate concrete; modular stone roadway on concrete base; and overall landscaping design.

In the 2nd phase (West Mall), DiDonato provided design for the demolition of the Wintergarden and streetscape from Third Street to Prospect Avenue at the mouth of the State Park.  Project included new streetscaping, including Eurocobbles, street lighting and benches, and two water features.  Sustainable design was achieved through the use of bioswales and rain gardens used for treating storm water.
